Customising Work-papers (Part 3) - Creating new items and headings on a page

This is a series of articles on how to customise work-papers. We will cover everything from changing a work item on a page to creating yourself a completely new set of templates. The plan is to start simple and work up, so we suggest you complete these in sequence as tutorials as each will build on the last.

Next we'll look at other things you can do to customise a page; moving items, adding/changing headings and adding work items.

Lets go back to our Internal Control checklist (not yet published remember). Under the 'Workpaper Masters' tab click 'Non-Profit Entities' under your firm templates area. You should see the unpublished page like this:

Click on the name to open the page.

Say we want to move an item to change the sequence or put under a different heading. Hovering over a work item will bring up a grab-handle as follows:

Dragging and dropping on the grab-handle will move it to another location anywhere on the page.

Say we want to add a new heading. Click on the Add Heading link:

A box will appear where you can type in your new heading:

Add your text then save. The heading will appear which may then be either dragged into position or work items may be created underneath it.

Note that there is also an edit and delete icon next to every heading. Below the new heading icon you have created there is also a 'Work item' box.

To add new work items under this heading click on it and you will see the following appear:

The large box is the text you wish to have in your work item. Remember putting *asterisks around the words you wish to highlight* bolds them and is a good way to draw the eye of the user to the key words in the statement.

'Name' is a brief phrase describing what the work item is about. This is important because it is the item identifier so must be unique on the page. It also will be the default heading for any sub-page that you create from this work item.

'Action' provides a list of custom actions that can be applied to any work-item such as setting it up for creating data tests for testing transactions. This is the subject of a later tutorial so for now (for normal work-items) just leave on 'Auto'.

'Is respawner' and 'Auto create' also relates to the creation of sub-workpapers we will come back to later, so leave blank for normal work items.

Once items are entered click 'save'. They will then show with 'raw' formatting (asterisks etc) until the page is refreshed. This is so you can easily tell which are your new items. Once the page is refreshed the new heading and items will move to the bottom of the page. Dragging the heading will also move the items under that heading:

Note that the page may be closed without publishing and all your changes will be saved, but just not yet available on a current job.
